Sukanya Shines on Debut Victory at Newbury

There are few better sights in racing than a debutante winning with authority — and that’s exactly what SUKANYA delivered at Newbury, powering home in the Compton Beauchamp Fillies’ Restricted Novice Stakes to make a winning start to her career.

Trained by Jack Channon and partnered by promising apprentice George Bass, the daughter of Invincible Army travelled strongly throughout the six-furlong contest. Despite showing signs of inexperience when asked to quicken, notably drifting left inside the final furlong, she displayed a willing attitude and a smart turn of foot to sweep past her rivals and win going away.

Sent off at 16/1, Sukanya beat more experienced opposition in a field of 14, stopping the clock in 1m 13.80s on good-to-firm ground, a performance full of promise, professionalism, and raw ability.

Trainer Jack Channon and Jockey George Bass had the following glowing reviews of SUKANYA post race:

George Bass (Jockey):

“She was a little green, hanging left, but showed a real will to win—once I straightened her out, she powered home well.”

Jack Channon (Trainer):

“She’s a filly with plenty of scope and that was a gutsy performance on her debut. She’ll improve massively from that run — this was just the start.”

She has come out of her race very well, and looks a filly very much on the rise, she will likely target the Group 3 Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot later this month. We cannot wait to see this exciting prospect return to the track in the near future!

Congratulations once again to connections, we cannot wait to see you all again at Ascot!

SUKANYA (£55,000Y: by Havana Grey: sister to 1¼m winner Patsy Snugfit, closely related to winner up to 7.4f Idoapologise (2-y-o 6f-7f winner, by Havana Gold) and half-sister to 3 winners, including winner up to 10.3f Let's Dream (2-y-o 1¼m winner, by Territories): dam French 1½m winner) looked a good prospect as she gave her in-form yard their first juvenile winner of the season, not getting the clearest of passages but still well on top at the finish; held up, headway when had to pick way through 2f out, quickened to lead final 1f, impressive; 7f should be no problem to her on breeding and she's sure to go on to better things.
