How it works

All of our horses are carefully selected from the top sales, chosen for their strength, athleticism and conformation, along with excellent pedigrees from proven, winning families. Once purchased, they are sent into training to embark on their racing careers, and will be sold when they are at their highest possible value.

As an owner you will receive your share of the prize money and sales proceeds, and are invited to regular social events, race days and stable visits to see your horses in training. We will support you in organising your racing calendar from start to finish, taking care of purchasing, training, racing, breeding and eventually selling your racehorses.

Getting started

We will work with you to create your own portfolio of horses which can be tailored to meet your own levels of interest and affordability; syndicates are kept to small numbers, usually between 10 and 20 people, so that you get the most out of ownership.

Getting Started

The share price includes all expenses until the end of the horse's three-year-old career, including their purchase price and training fees. Most of our horses are sold within two years, although may be kept for longer if they are likely to increase their capital. The company and/or trainers often retain at least a 10% stake in all of our horses to ensure that we have a vested interest in achieving success at the highest level.

Our team takes care of all aspects of owning a racehorse to make the process as smooth as possible for you, including:

  • Analysis of pedigrees and conformation to assess the value of thoroughbreds being offered for sale, both privately and at public auctions.
  • Keeping abreast of market trends across both the breeding and racing industries.
  • Bidding on horses in the auction ring for our clients or brokering deals for horses being offered privately.
  • Advising on breeding plans for broodmares and facilitating the booking of these mares to stallions that are in high demand.
  • Extensive travel to represent our clients at sales across the country and internationally.
  • Networking and building of relationships with industry professionals to maintain and expand our sales business.
  • Working closely with veterinarians, farriers and other equine health professionals to evaluate the fitness of the individual horses.

At the stables

At various times throughout the year we arrange for owners to visit their horses at the trainers' yards to see them in action and gain behind the scenes access, providing owners the opportunity to gain insights directly from the trainers. A stable visit will highlight that it's not just about winning with the horses, it's also about understanding the preparation prior to race day!

Tattersalls

Tattersalls, located in Newmarket, was established in 1766 and is the leading bloodstock auctioneer in Europe, selling 10,000 horses a year. It still prices horses in guineas (equivalent to one pound and five pence), in accordance with tradition. Tattersalls’ returns have increased significantly year on year, with annual turnover topping 400 million guineas in 2022. Last year saw record sales across the board, with returns made at the 2022 October Yearling Sales up by 50.3% from 2021. The world's most expensive yearling was a son of Frankel, coming in at 2.8 million guineas.

Tattersalls offers a number of bonuses for winning horses bought from the auction house. These include:

£20,000 Tattersalls October Book 1 Bonus

£15,000 Craven Breeze Up Bonus

£125,000 Tattersalls Craven Royal Ascot Bonus

£125,000 Tattersalls Craven Group 1 Bonus

Yearling Sales

Our team attend several yearling sales throughout the year, including the August Arqana Deauville Sale, the Keenland September Sale, the Goffs Ireland Orby Sale and the Tattersalls Newmarket Book 1 Sale.

Breeze Up Sales

We time the breezes and use the data with physical examination to identify a shortlist. For the breeze ups we start in Newmarket at the Tattersalls Craven Sale: Europe's No.1 breeze-up sale. The Craven Sale has produced a remarkable 52 individual Group and Listed winners since 2015.

Horses In Training Sales

We identify horses who we believe to be on an upward curve and who are not only well handicapped, but are horses who could compete at the highest level given the right management, trainer and campaign.

National Hunt

We work with Aidan O'Ryan to source our National Hunt Horses. Aidan has purchased champion horses for trainers including Gordon Elliott, Richard Fahey, Keith Dalgleish, Joseph O'Brien and Kevin Prendergast. Aidan is the buyer of several Cheltenham festival winners and multiple group and grades performers around the world, including Carlito Brigante, Labaik, Veneer Of Charm, Chosen Mate, Mick Jazz, Zanjabeel, Beckford, River Boyne and Group 1 flat winner Ribchester.

Mares Sales

We select our breeding stock from the Tattersalls December Mares Sale, focusing on the Sceptre Sessions - a sale reserved for the highest-quality fillies and broodmares in Europe.

Breeding Syndicates

The bloodstock industry contributes £3.5 billion to the UK economy per year, and can be a very lucrative investment for breeders. We select our broodmares from the top sales, and aim to produce successful offspring by pairing them with the most commercially viable stallions.

Breeding Syndicates

We purchase our breeding stock from the Tattersalls December Mares Sale and the Sceptre Sessions - a sale reserved for the highest-quality fillies and broodmares in Europe. The launch of the Sceptre Sessions last season saw the highest grossing-day in European sales history, and the four-day sale totalled over 80 million guineas in all.

When matching the mares with their stallions, we consider both parents’ genetics and racing performance to produce a cross with the best breeding potential. Our bloodstock agents have a keen eye for thoroughbreds with prospects of becoming a leading stallion/mare, and we aim to purchase fillies that can achieve a high standard on the track with the view of being future broodmares.

Once foaled, there are two avenues we can take when it comes to the offspring of our mares:

Retaining and racing the offspring.

Selling the offspring.

Selling the offspring as a yearling offers a great opportunity to make a high return before they even reach the racetrack. Last year the most expensive yearling sold at auction was a son of Frankel, coming in at 2.8 million guineas.
