No Shame in Defeat: Scommessa Sicura's Rise Continues at Doncaster

Scommessa Sicura continued her remarkable run of consistency with another eye catching second placed finish, this time in the Group 2 Betfred May Hill Stakes at Doncaster on the second day of the St Leger Festival, further bolstering her progressive two-year-old profile!

Ridden again by Oisin Murphy for trainer Andrew Balding, the daughter of Cracksman travelled strongly throughout the contest, and despite being unable to live with an imperious Musical Times, her runner up effort nonetheless kept her remarkable record intact; five races into her career, she has now finished in the top two every single time out.

The result is a significant one for her page and her market value alike. Bought for 100,000 guineas as a yearling at the Tattersalls October Sale in 2025, Scommessa Sicura has long since repaid that outlay many times over. Today's run means she now carries both Listed and Group black type on her record, having claimed her first black-type with a second in the Listed Stonehenge Stakes at Salisbury before backing it up in Group company at Doncaster. A combination which will materially strengthen her appeal whether she is sold on or retained as a broodmare prospect in years to come.

With a number of exciting opportunities in the near future, connections may well be tempted to explore the Fillies' Mile at the illustrious Breeders Cup meeting as the logical next step for a filly who has shown she has no trouble matching it with the best around.

SCOMMESSA SICURA (IRE) well backed in the minutes before the off, had finished a narrow second to Musical Times in the summer but had experience firmly on side on that occasion and was well and truly put in her place by said rival; raced near side, in touch, effort 2f out, left behind by winner soon after but stuck at it to hold on for second; as likeable as she is, there's next to no chance she can reverse form with an on-song winner in the Fillies' Mile.

A rather lop-sided betting market spoke of the untapped potential that the well-connected Musical Times arrived with, particularly as the rest at single-figure odds had either won or been second at listed level and above and she produced a breathtaking performance in extending her winning run to 3, one right up there with the best seen from a 2-y-o at any distance in Europe this season, the timefigure fimrly underpinning the visual display.
