Background

MAKESTIC NEWLAW is set to have a hugely exciting campaign in 2023 as a three-year-old, in the manner of his sire NEW BAY, who ran only once as a two-year-old but excelled at three to win the French Derby (Group 1) and multiple Group titles thereafter. Like himself, NEW BAY’s progeny are renowned for improving significantly at three and four, as has been the case with Group 1-winners SAFFRON BEACH, BAYSIDE BOY and BAY BRIDGE, the latter who this year defeated the great BAAEED in the most electrifying race of the 2022 season, despite a slow start as a two-year-old.  

MAJESTIC NEWLAW has shown lots of potential and will only improve from here. He took second behind 101-rated ANCESTRAL LAND at Chepstow and another third behind 104-rated PROVERB, who went on to win the Listed Criterium de Vitesse at Longchamp in October. His damsire is LAWMAN, who like NEW BAY, also won the French Derby and was successful at three before becoming a Classic-producing sire in St Leger winner HARBOUR LAW. 

His pedigree shows he has a lot of potential for the 2023 season, and it is for this reason he is in training with Paul and Oliver Cole, the father-son duo based at Whatcombe Estate in Oxfordshire. Classic-winning Champion trainer Paul Cole has won some of the most prestigious races globally, including the English Derby, Irish Derby, King George, Irish Oaks, St Leger and Ascot Gold Cup. This season saw the team win the Group 2 Richmond Stakes with ROYAL SCOTSMAN, before he took a narrow second in the Dewhurst. We can't wait to see what MAJESTIC NEWLAW can do in their hands!
